What are you willing to starve for?
I’ve been thinking a lot about music and marketing and how to make any money in this ridiculous business. Lately, it seems, much of my research guides me to different people’s blogs. Seth Godin, for example, has become a hub of learning. He cites an article by Kevin Kelly about how to sell things that are free which will have my wheels turning for days. Check them out if your interested.
I’m not one of those artists that say, “Money?! No, man, it’s gotta all be about the music! The music, man!” It’s not that I don’t love the music, but I don’t want to starve just to play it.
This has led to an important realization about myself. I don’t really love the music as much as I thought. Sure, I really really like it, I’m not willing to sacrifice everything for it.
The thing I really love, what I think I’d be able to starve for, are the people. Whether they hear me at a show, an open mic, or in a recording, I want them to learn something about life and themselves. I want them to be delighted.
Hopefully, if I do a good enough job, they might even pay may rent
