Songwriting: The Monotony of Materialism
I wrote a new song last night. At least most of one. The best songs that I write are usually birthed in about 20 minutes. Sometimes it takes a little longer, but it is usually a pain free, easy process. Almost too easy.
The worst songs I’ve ever written, or the worst segments of songs take much longer. I can work on a song for hours and get nowhere. Something is just not right. Foggy, opaque, unattainable. At this point I usually have to write down and record what I have and give up. I put the file on my desktop to come back to later, but I usually don’t.
Last night, I was fooling around with my guitar, playing some random chords to a random rhythm. I liked it. Brett danced. I needed some lyrics.
I hummed at a little melody, came up with a few lines. Those multiplied themselves into a few more. All of a sudden I had a poppy, catchy song about the monotony of materialism. Pretty cool, huh?
