The Number
Number of people brought to tears because of “A Thousand Skins:” 2
I was challenged by Seth’s (Godin) post to put a number on things. I’m not wild about this. Emotions are not math, nor is music, but in a spirit of brusque silliness I thought I’d use this number to share a story.
Brett and I sang “A Thousand Skins” for a friend’s family this weekend. We sounded great, the best the song has ever sounded. Our harmonies meshed. The song rose and fell and then rose again to the climactic:
I would sing
A hundred million love songs
To make you know
That I forgive you
And then fell again to silence. I wish you could of been there. I looked up from my guitar and saw a woman wiping her eyes. I didn’t know what to do, I’ve never made anyone cry like that before.
So we just played another song, “Golden Gate,” usually our best number, but it was a let down after “A Thousand Skins.” And that was it.
My goal in music has always been to give people emotional, even mystical experiences that inspire them to hope. Saturday was the first sign that this was happening. It’s a hard thing to measure, even harder to put a number on it. So hold this loosely:
Number of people brought to tears because of “A Thousand Skins:” 2
